August 15, 2006 - ELDERSBURG, MD. S&K Roofing, Siding and Windows, broke all records at the Howard County 4-H livestock sale when they paid $6925 (that's $25/lb.) for the 4-H Grand Champion Pig, raised by 18-year-old Drew Smith from Taneytown, Maryland.

A Fun Way to Support the Community

S&K has been bidding on Grand Champion pigs at the Fair for the past six years, and each year the bidding gets higher.  "For us, it's a fun way to support the 4-H program and the young people that work so hard raising these prize-winning animals," stated S&K's owner Don Katzenberger. "Our team attends the auction every year and always has fun - it's just a great way for us to give back to the community that supports us so well."  After the auction, Katzenberger donated Coco back to Drew for breeding.

A Champion Raised in Loving Memory

Drew Smith, an active member and participant of the Maryland 4-H Youth Program, raised the Grand Champion Pig named Coco. Only 9 months old, Coco weighed 277 lbs. at the time of the sale. Born in January of this year, Coco grew to twice her size since Drew first acquired her in April 2006 to gain the title of Grand Champion at this year's Fair. Coco was Drew's tenth entry in the Fair's pig competition, and was one that was particularly special to Drew. "The pig was named after one of my high school friends who passed away earlier this year," stated Drew. "It's been in loving memory of my friend that we have been taking such good care of Coco."

4-H is the youth development program of Maryland Cooperative Extension and has been an active part of Howard County for over 80 years. Throughout the years, thousands of young people have participated in 4-H programs developing their skills in leadership, citizenship, and achievement. In fact, the success of the Howard County Fair can in large part be attributed to 4-H Youth, who highlight the fair every year with various livestock exhibits, home art entries, public speaking and educational demonstrations.
